      Not that cold, buddy

I want to know why "Baby, It's Cold Outside" gets any play these days. You hear that song everywhere, and it's wildly inappropriate. Where else, besides rap music, can someone get away with singing a song about date rape?

      I really can't stay
      (but baby it's cold outside)
Obviously, she wants to leave, but he wants her to stay.

      I've got to go away
      (but baby it's cold outside)
      She repeats her request

      This evening has been
(been hoping that you'd drop in)
      So very nice
(i'll hold your hands, they're just like ice)
She's trying to say goodbye, but he won't let her go.

      My mother will start worry
      (beautiful whats your hurry)
My father will be pacing the floor
      (listen to the fireplace roar)
She reasons with him but he ignores her pleas.

      So really i'd better scurry
      (beautiful please don't hurry)
but maybe just a half a drink more
(put some records on while i pour)
She gives into him a little so that she can negotiate her release

      the neighbors might faint
      (baby it's bad out there)
Again, she give another reason that she has to leave.

      say what's in this drink
(no cabs to be had out there)
Quite possibly the most damning evidence. He's spiked her drink.

      i wish i knew how
(your eyes are like starlight now)
      to break this spell
(i'll take your hat, your hair looks swell)
i ought to say "no, no, no sir"
(mind if i move in closer)
at least i'm gonna say that i tried
(what's the sense in hurtin' my pride)
      i really can't stay
      (oh baby don't hold out)
She admits that he is appealing, but in the end she still says no.

      i simply must go
      (but baby it's cold outside)
      the answer is no
      (but baby it's cold outside)
      She says no twice more.

      your welcome has been
(how lucky that you droped in)
      so nice and warm
(look out the window at that storm)
      my sister will be suspicious
      (gosh your lips look delcious)
my brother will be there at the door
      (waves upon the tropical shore)
my maiden aunts mind is vicious
      (gosh your lips are delicous)
She makes every appeal that she can think of. Mentioning her family is a classic hostage negotiation technique.

but maybe just a cigarette more
      (never such a blizzard before)
      i've gotta get home
(but baby you'd freeze out there)
      say lend me a coat
(it's up to your knees out there)
      you've really been grand
(i thrill when you touch my hand)
      but don't you see?
(how can you do this thing to me?)
there's bound to be talk tomorrow
      (think of my lifelong sorrow)
at least there will be plenty implied
(if you got namonia and died)
      i really can't stay
      (get over that old out)
Negotiating again for her release she agrees to stay for a moment longer while she continues to state her case and refuse. Each time he denies her requet.
I think we all know where that evening was going.

      My blog’s so old…

…I’ve got posts about updating Netscape.

…I wrote about how Firefox’s update to 1.5 was no big deal.

Good gravy, it’s been around so long and used in so many different ways.  From podcasts to news about podcasts.  It’s been home to a few rants and raves and a few apologies. Thanks for reading folks.  Or just me, whatever.

Scamtastic Goodness for Eight Year Olds

Taught my 8 y/o son this scam on Saturday.  The wife had some friends over so I thought it'd be the perfect opportunity for him to show off and have a good time.  I showed him the trick with a couple Harry Potter books that were on the shelf.  He was totally shocked.  When I walked through the math with him he got all excited.

We chose a couple other books off the shelves for him to learn and then got to work with our plan.  (Moby Dick and Alice in Wonderland)  We worked as a team for the scam.

      Here's how we did it:

      1. He leaned the words.  Took some practice. ("Humility" was a hard word for him to remember.)
      2. He told the guests and my wife that he had memorized all of the words in the books in our library.  Not just the words but the exact position of every word in all the books.
      3. I told him that I'd quiz him.  I pulled two "random" books off the shelf.
      4. Got a 3 digit number from the wife and ran through the math for a "random" number.
      5. A guest picked which book and of course he came up with the correct word.

Here's where we blew there minds.  My wife, being the suspicious one, decided to pick out a book herself. (Uh, oh...)  She told my son to grab a Harry Potter book. (YES!!!) I suggested that we'd already found a great random number,  let's just go to the same place.  She and her friends agreed.  Flipped it open and I whipped out the correct word.  Minds totally blown.

What's the chances that she'd just happen to pick the correct books?  Probably 1 in a hundred but it worked out for us this time.

      Aal Izz Well तीन मुर्ख

3 Idiots is a great movie.  Please take the time to see it.  Aamir Khan is definitely one of my favorite actors.  With R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi as well this movie is going to fit right in with my collection.

You have to read subtitles unless, of course, you understand the language.  Don’t let that stop you.  Please see this movie.  Not only is it very fun, but it’s got a good message.

If all goes according to plan it should be available on YouTube soon.  Watch for it.

      Back on the Diet

I’ll be going on vacation at the end of August so it’s time to get back in to some kind of shape.  (Something besides round anyway.)

I have far less weight to lose this time. I’m going to use weightwatchers again. Hopefully following the plan will let me drop the weight pretty quickly.

      Robby at Disneyland

I’ve also been looking into joining a kung fu class.  Both for exercise and a bit of fun.  I don’t find traditional workouts enjoyable or fun.  Even in the days long gone when I’d go out and run for exercise I never got that “high” from endorphins that people talk about.  It never felt good.  I never had a good time of it.  I’m living right next to some hiking trails so I’ll probably be hitting those as well.

      Time to build another computer

I need to build a rackmounted computer that is super fast.  It’s going to be installed in a mobile rack for recording audio to ProTools on the go.  I think what I’ll do is document the process here so that I can refer back.

      Here are my first thoughts:

      1. Not sure about a chassis.  Never bought a rackmount chassis.  Are there particular things that I should take into account when researching them?  I suppose it has to be light but durable.  It will be in a mobile rack.
      2. SSDs?  A nice fast SSD for the system drive might be a good way to have darn fast response from ProTools.
      3. RAID? What does ProTools think of RAID?  RAID 10 probably right?  Striped for speed and mirrored for protection.
      4. No point in running 64-bit. ProTools doesn’t work unless you’re running 32-bit OS.
      5. Memory- Not 64-bit so no point in installing more than 3GB
      6. Video- A nice video card should probably be installed in case I decide to do post production work… SLI???
      7. Processor?  No idea yet.  Probably Core i7

Tonight is the Night for Upgrades.

I’m moving my home PC over to 64-bit tonight.  I’m pretty excited about it.  I’ve been using 64-bit at the office for a while, but I’ve been nervous about doing it to my home machine. I’m also considering moving to Windows 7… Not quite sure.

In other news I’ve got some pork chops in the slow cooker that are just calling to me. I’m salivating already.

      Time To Do Some Cooking

The wife and I found a cookbook called Shakespeare’s Kitchen that has some wonderful recipes in it almost a year ago.  I’m finally ready to cook something from it.  I’m almost embarrassed that it took so long.

It’s not that I haven’t had the desire to do it.  The problem is that some of the ingredients are difficult to find in the local markets.  The recipe that I’m using requires some currants.  Unfortunately I can’t seem to find them.  I’ll be visiting another market in the next day or so to keep up the search.  I have to do it soon or I’ll have to freeze the chicken.

The recipe is for chicken with artichokes.  It sounds absolutely delicious.  I can’t wait to prepare it.  Yum.

      I don’t want a “Maverick” president.
      Noun

      Singular
      maverick

      Plural
      mavericks

      maverick (plural mavericks)

      1. An unbranded range animal.
      2. One who does not abide by rules.
      3. (The addition of quotations indicative of this usage is being sought): One who creates or uses unconventional and/or controversial ideas or practices.
      4. (poker slang) A queen and a jack as a starting hand in Texas hold 'em

      http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/maverick

The McCain/Palin campaign has been using the term “maverick” quite a lot lately.  They’ve said that both McCain and Palin are mavericks.  I assume that they are trying to distance themselves from the current administration without using any of the democrat’s buzzwords.

Mavericks are cool right?  Tom Cruise was Maverick in Top Gun. James Garner and Mel Gibson were Bret Maverick the well dressed poker player and con man.  Who wants Maverick as a president?

Let’s start with the first definition.  We can all probably agree that there are no “unbranded range animal[s]” in the race.  Sure, the childish folks out there might name call, but in reality it’s not happening.  I think I can safely ignore that definition.

The second definition is where it get’s interesting.  The McCain/Palin campaign surely can’t mean that the candidates will not abide by rules or should I say “laws.”  This definition clearly works for the current administration.  The Bush regime has no problem breaking the rules and ignoring those pesky laws that obviously don’t apply.  The campaign may defend this usage by saying that they mean the rule of corruption and garbage that has infested the government.  The problem with this argument is that you’d have to say McCain does not follow the rule because he follows the rules.  This does not work for the common usage of the term.  I think they want to say that he’s not afraid (to use a cliché) to think and work outside the box to solve the country’s problems.  I don’t think that works for me.

Number three doesn’t sound very appealing either.  I don’t want any surprises from the next president.  I don’t want to worry about an unpredictable cowboy with his finger on the trigger.  I’m not saying that McCain/Palin are all that.  What I’m saying is that the term “maverick” implies reckless, unpredictable, careless.  Is that what the M/P campaign thinks American wants?

The 4th definition, like the first, doesn’t really apply unless you want to do some name calling.
